Happy Sun Face The Alpha "Gal"

Navigating the Shift: I’m the Gal Behind the Journey

If you had told me years ago that my life’s path would lead to decoding the complex intersections of severe environmental illness, food allergies, and genetic health, I might not have believed you. But if there is one thing I have learned on this journey, it’s that illness isn't just a random occurrence—sometimes, it’s an injury. And turning decades of unexplained chronic health struggles into provable, navigating steps is exactly why I am here.
I’m the "Gal" behind The Gluten Free Alpha Gal. The name is a bit of a pun, but the reality behind it is a life completely rewritten. I am navigating this new way of living right alongside you, figuring out how to heal, how to eat, and how to reclaim a high-quality life when your body feels like a battleground.
Where My Story Began: Granite City, Illinois
To understand my health, you have to understand where I came from. I was born and raised in the heart of downtown Granite City, Illinois, during the 1960s and 1970s. My family lived just a few blocks away from local coke ovens, massive steel mills, the Jennison-Wright plant, and two industrial EPA Superfund sites.
As a very active child, I grew up playing barefoot in the local dirt and swimming in Horseshoe Lake, Sandy Lake, and Shady Lake while my dad fished. We regularly ate the catfish, carp, and bass caught from those waters. What we didn't know at the time was that the heavy metals, industrial smokestacks, and contaminated road fill fill running through our neighborhood were heavily toxifying our environments—and our bodies.
My mother was born and raised in that exact same radius. And my grandmother was raised in the same area. Decades later, science is finally validating what many of us have intuitively known for a generation: the deep, invisible connections of epigenetics and transgenerational toxic exposure. The health struggles I face today aren't a coincidence; they are tied directly to the legacy of environmental exposure passed down through my family.
The Turning Point: Living with "The Triple Threat"
For over twenty-five years, I dealt with a massive web of unexplained health symptoms. I was a patient who possessed an extensive file of medical records where tests constantly came back "normal," leaving me dismissed or misunderstood by the traditional medical system. I have spent my life with highly heightened senses of smell and taste, an intense susceptibility to biting insects, severe chronic pain, and a body that rejected modern pharmaceutical treatments.
Through decades of trial, error, and intense personal research, the puzzle pieces finally locked into place:
    • Celiac Disease: Diagnosed twenty years ago, forcing me to maintain a strict, 100% gluten-free home to protect my digestive tract and nervous system.
    • Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS): Triggered after moving to a heavily tick-infested area near a river in Missouri around 2023, where I sustained numerous lone star tick bites. By mid-2026, my body developed severe, dangerous reactions to red meat and mammalian products.
    • Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) & Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS): A lifelong battle stemming from my early industrial heavy metal exposure and a subsequent five-year toxic mold exposure in the early 2000s. My immune system is constantly hyper-reactive, mistaking basic foods, synthetic chemicals, and environmental triggers for a mortal threat.

Reclaiming the Kitchen & Building Community
When you are dealing with Celiac, Alpha-Gal, and MCAS all at once, eating becomes a terrifying minefield. For a long time, I felt like there was almost nothing safe left for me to consume.
But as a photographer, I have spent my life looking at the world through a lens of creative possibility. I decided to bring that same creative eye into my kitchen. I grow 99% of what I consume at home, sourcing organic ingredients, experimenting with safe, low-histamine, whole-food flavorings, and crafting pure, chemical-free options that keep my mast cells calm.
The Gluten Free Alpha Gal is a space built from the heart. It is a platform dedicated to providing:
    • Layered, Safe Recipes: Dedicated guides for clean Celiac-safe cooking, Alpha-Gal mammal-free dining, and the ultimate "Triple-Threat" recipes for those balancing all three protocols at once.
    • Environmental Advocacy: Deep dives into Superfund sites, toxic tort resources, and the cutting-edge science of transgenerational epigenetics.
    • Reputable Resources: Direct links to verified, high-quality medical and toxic injury research networks, completely free of corporate medical noise.

You do not have to navigate this overwhelming new lifestyle alone. Whether you are dealing with one of these diagnoses or fighting to prove an environmental injury of your own, welcome to our kitchen table. Let’s learn, heal, and advocate together.

A Legacy of Resilience

My story begins in a small town, where family traditions and community values shaped my early years. Growing up, I was surrounded by the warmth of family gatherings and the comfort of home-cooked meals. However, life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with Celiac disease and later, Alpha Gal syndrome. These challenges became pivotal moments in my life, pushing me to explore new ways of living and eating.
